Dunno if I’ll beat it down or let it rest on its own when I feel I’ve gotten enough out of it. I don’t wanna look back on this one and say I thought it was a good game but I didn’t enjoy it enough.
I like games that are deeper than they look. I like games that are complex, and games that are designed to keep me on my toes. I even like games that are difficult. What matters isn’t how much this game might have that it doesn’t have, but how much the game has that I really want. I like puzzle games and I like my dungeon crawls to be challenging and not too grindy.
In the case of this game, maybe a little grindier. From the beginning of the game, it isn’t much more than a linear dungeon crawler. The few puzzles (the party has to light some candles, for example) that are scattered throughout the world are gimmicky, and aren’t particularly challenging. I never felt like my characters’ skills were useless, and I never felt like my characters were far out of their depth, so I never felt particularly lost.
If the game had a great story, plot, or dialogue, then I’d be excited about this game. I feel like the story, for this game, is pretty weak. I don’t want to say that because I’m not very familiar with the backstory, but the focus of the story is on a naive, yet very pure looking, red-haired girl. That’s the lead character, and that’s really all you’re going to get. The story is just a vehicle to make the characters look good, and to get you through the first half dozen or so levels where there’s a lot of combat.
The second half of the game is when the combat really gets interesting. In the first half, you’re just running around as a party of four characters, finding chests, and battling enemies. The second half, you’re just leveling up, building your character, and you have a much clearer purpose. But the pacing is a little off. At first, it’s nearly impossible to tell if you’re just continuing the story or if you’re continuing the story and progressing. I found that it was difficult to tell when the game was going to switch over to the other mode, but once the mode switch was done, it was perfectly apparent.
