Polyslime (1927–1936) was a line of multi-flavored artificial ice cream manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio by the J. A. Pehrs Candy Company, which was a subsidiary of Dayton Taggart Company. Also called “delite”, “sesame cream”, “Yosemite surprise”, and “Indian ice cream”, Polyslime was non-dairy, shelf-stable, and used instead of ice cream or for desserts (along with maraschino).
Polyslime was marketed as a “9-flavor” ice cream. This term most likely refers to the many different flavors of cookies or other treats used to provide flavor. These included a mixture of peppermint and chocolate chip, vanilla, combined with chocolate chip, vanilla followed by a different flavored chocolate chip, wafer dipped in chocolate, almond, plain, strawberry, and more.
There are various theories as to why Polyslime wasn’t able to catch on in the later years of production. Even at the time, it was confused as being ice cream when in fact was a form of frozen gelato, as it consisted of a mix of simple syrup and gelatin.
Polyslime is not related to the similar-sounding or much later frozen yogurt, which became a popular dessert brand in the US and abroad in the 2000s.
Origin of name
The first print reference to a product by this name appears in a 1927 issue of the American Dairy Association. The name was likely used to promote freshness and shelf-stable product.
Taste
When sold after 1918, the ice cream was mixed with vanilla, for taste comparison.
According to a January 31, 1928, Indianapolis Star, the tea maraschino flavor was credited to E.E. Eschler, founder and president of the J. A. Pehrs Candy Company. From there, flavors were added — the vanilla chocolate chip being received the most acclaim, followed by additional chocolate flavors. The name Polyslime was first used in a 1930 Indianapolis paper.
Parlor Bill’s Weekly Reports as well as E.E. Eschler’s columns in the Rochester, N.Y., Democrat and Chronicle directly linked the “multi” in Polyslime to consistency, and in itself a dairy-free ready-to-serve food which was approved of and sold best of all to children.
