Detect clicks on certain character positions in a text (JavaScript/jQuery)

I’m working on creating a text editor in JavaScript.
I have managed to achieve so far that when you select the entire text, a dialog appears where you can make changes, like bold, italic, underline, strike out, etc.
But I want that if you click for example on the first letter of the paragraph text, a dialog should appear only with the previous and next words.
Right now I am using the following code to detect when you click somewhere in the text, and then I display the dialog for those characters:

This works, but I am afraid that when two clicks are made in the same time, the dialog will display twice, because the contents of the.html() are the text between the two clicks, so I need to detect clicks only with respect to a certain character position
